Scottsdale, AZ board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Carlos Mata aka Dr. Scottsdale®, performs liposuction by making small hidden incisions in a selected area. Liposuction by Dr. Scottsdale® is performed with Vaser, an ultrasonic waves device that helps melt the fat cells, and a high-powered vacuum to remove them. Vaser Liposuction gives better and smoother results than traditional liposuction. Men and women most commonly remove fat from the stomach, hips, lower back, thighs, arms, neck, and chest.
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure performed under deep sedation in our surgical center in Scottsdale, AZ. The procedure can last from 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the area(s) treated. It can be done alone or combined. The surgical technique used by Scottsdale Liposuction specialist, Dr. Carlos Mata always follows the three-step technique. This three-step technique allows liposuction to be performed safely with minimal scarring while giving smoother results, and a faster recovery.
Numbing the area of concern before starting the procedure is one of the most important steps for liposuction. Tumescent is a solution made of saline solution, lidocaine, and epinephrine. The tumescent solution is injected before starting the liposuction and helps control bleeding and reduces the pain afterward. It also allows Dr. Scottsdale® to perform the surgery under deep sedation (breathing on your own), preventing the patient from going under general anesthesia. Tumescent liposuction, known as the “Super-Wet”, also offers a faster and smoother way of removing fat for both men and women.
Vaser is an ultrasound device used right after the tumescent injections. It utilizes ultrasound energy (ultrasonic waves) to break down fat cells. This device helps improve liposuction results, reduce pain afterward, and downtime. Vaser helps with skin retraction and gives precise body contouring sculpting. Vaser offers smoother results for liposuction revision cases by allowing to breakdown the scar tissue.
Manual liposuction or assisted liposuction both use a thin tube, called a cannula, connected to a vacuum to suction the fat from your body. Manual liposuction is very slow and can take a few hours for one small area. Dr. Carlos Mata aka Dr. Scottsdale® used MicroAire: Power Assisted Liposuction System. This powerful and precise instrument helps remove the fat faster. It increases the control and accuracy of the cannula giving more precise results. Assisted liposuction will be faster than manual liposuction and the body contouring results will be better, more defined, and long-lasting.
Ab etching, muscle definition, or high definition liposuction is a technique used to highlight your muscles. High-definition liposuction by Dr. Scottsdale® is a combination of Vaser and liposuction to enhance your muscles. It can be done on your arms, calves, legs, or more commonly on your abdominal muscles. The goal of high-definition liposuction is to highlight your muscles. Dr. Scottsdale® is not creating muscle! He’s thinned out the layer of fat over the muscles to give you a more defined athletic appearance.
Liposuction removes fat and improves contour and shape, but it does not address sagging or drooping skin. Sometimes, liposuction of a large area can leave your skin loose. It’s important to discuss your expectations with Dr. Scottsdale® because solutions exist to help address saggy skin. Magic Tight® is a technique developed by Dr. Carlos Mata to treat skin laxity. You will be able to achieve amazing results and contour your body. Learn more
After surgery, patients are required to wear a compression garment to help the body adjust to its new shape. Drainage will occur for about 1 week. Lymphatic massages are recommended for a faster recovery. Usually, you can go back to work after 1 to 2 weeks depending on the area treated. Patients are advised to avoid exercising for at least 6 weeks. Final results usually can be seen within 6 — 8 weeks. For long-lasting results controlling your weight and exercising regularly is the key.

The maximum amount of fat that can be removed is 5 liters per lipo session. Removing more fat via liposuction can create complications. If you have more than 5 liters of fat that need to be removed via liposuction, you will need a second surgery. Each surgery needs to be at least 3 months apart.
Lipo is not designed for weight loss. Liposuction is a powerful body contouring surgery that helps sculpt and contour your body. Fat loss isn’t the same as weight loss. But you can expect your weight to be lower than before your surgery
Lipo is a procedure that targets and removes fat cells from your body for good. Typically the fat will not return as long as you keep your post-lipo weight. If you gain weight, fat will grow in other places where you didn’t have lipo. For example, if you have Vaser Lipo 360, fat can grow in places like your arms or thighs. But it’s possible you can gain in the area where you had liposuction, usually if you gain over 10 pounds.
Swelling can last from 4 weeks to 3+ months depending on your body and recovery. It’s important to wear your garment, get your lymphatic massages, etc. to reduce your recovery time.
Liposuction does not correct or address sagging and drooping skin. Sometimes liposuction of extensive areas like abdomen or back can leave you with loose skin. If skin laxity is a concern, skin tightening treatments like Magic Tight or surgical skin removal can be performed.
Other liposuction techniques exist like laser liposuction. This laser-assisted liposuction uses laser technology on specified areas of fat to bursting energy that will loosen and liquefy the fat for removal. LAL liposuction includes brands such as SmartLipo, SlimLipo, Lipolite Laser Liposculpture, polite, and ProLipo PLUS. Unfortunately, this technique creates a lot of scar tissue and uneven results.
