Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation| Scottsdale, AZ

Vaginal rejuvenation surgery is a cosmetic procedure that restores and improves the shape, size, and function of the vaginal area. Vaginal rejuvenation is frequently performed for discomfort rather than cosmetic reasons. Many women are unaware of solutions for their vaginal discomfort. There are multiple options to improve your vaginal discomfort and sexual life. The vaginal rejuvenation surgery can include multiple procedures or just one depending on the patient's goals, expectations, and concerns. Here are five common vaginal rejuvenation procedures that can be combined together or done separately.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

  • What area does a Clitoral Hood Reduction target?

This procedure targets the excess skin and folds around the clitoris. The extra skin folds can create a bulge that can interfere with the sensation in that area by reducing the exposure of the clitoris. The Clitoral hood reduction procedure has three goals: improve the overall appearance, decrease discomfort with intercourse, but also increase sensation allowing stronger & more frequent orgasms.

  • Surgical Technique: Preserving the nerves

The clitoris area is a very delicate area that is full of nerves. The goal of the procedure is to help the patient increase sensation, so preserving the nerves is the number one priority. During the procedure, Dr. Scottsdale® only removes the extra skin and does not remove any tissue. Preserving the tissue is important because this is where the nerves are located. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation (light sedation) and is usually combined with a labiaplasty.

  • Clitoral Hood Reduction Recovery

If the surgery is done alone, the recovery is about 3 to 7 days before going back to work, but 6 weeks before any sexual intercourse.

Labiaplasty - Labia Minora Reduction

  • What area does a Labiaplasty target?

The labiaplasty targets the labia minora, also known as the “small/minor lips”. There are some women born with asymmetrical vaginal lips, or experience hanging skin in this area. This condition can create irritation, infections, or discomfort during sexual intercourse and/or exercise.

  • Labiaplasty Surgical Technique

The most common approach is to use a device known as Iris Scissors. This fine, advanced surgical tool allows the surgeon to reshape the inner folds of the labia. In the process, a clean “V” shaped wedge is made to the vaginal lips and is removed to reduce the size. Dr. Scottsdale® will carefully work to reshape and reconstruct the lips to meet the patient’s aesthetic goals. Dissolvable sutures are used to close the incision. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation (light sedation) in our Scottsdale, AZ office.

  • Labiaplasty Recovery

Women who undergo a labiaplasty will need to avoid any activity that may cause swelling and bleeding, such as exercise, sexual activity, douching, and the use of tampons. These activities may be resumed slowly after 6 weeks post-op.

Perineoplasty - Vaginal Opening Tightening

  • What area does a Perineoplasty target?

Perineoplasty surgery is a procedure that targets the vagina opening and the anus (perineum). The goal of a perineoplasty is to tighten the area by narrowing the vaginal opening. The perineum provides support for surrounding organs and it envelops the muscles that play a part in keeping the vagina tight. Sometimes after pregnancy, childbirth or medical condition the perineum can develop a bulge, scar tissue, unwanted skin, and/or the surrounding muscles can be weakened.

  • Perineoplasty Surgical Technique

The procedure is done under local or IV sedation in our Scottsdale, AZ office. Dr. Scottsdale® will correct the area by tightening the skin and sometimes muscles as well. The vaginal opening will be returned to a pre-baby diameter. The procedure can also correct a stitched area like after an episiotomy. The goal is to allow women to feel more friction increasing their sexual satisfaction.

  • Perineoplasty Recovery

Recovery is the most important part of the surgery. Patients will need to avoid exercising, the use of tampons, and sexual intercourse for the first 6 weeks post-op.

Vaginoplasty - Internal Vaginal Tightening

  • What area does a Vaginoplasty target?

Vaginoplasty is a procedure that aims to tighten internally the vagina that became loose from vaginal childbirth, medical conditions, and/or aging. Sometimes after childbirth, the vaginal muscles can become looser, and one way of tightening them back is a vaginoplasty.

  • Vaginoplasty Surgical Technique

The procedure is done by Dr. Scottsdale® in his surgical office under deep sedation. The tissue and muscle are tightened with strong sutures through the entire vaginal canal. Once it is tightened, the skin is sutured back closed.

  • Vaginoplasty Recovery

4 – 6 weeks post-op is recommended without any exercising or sexual intercourse.

Fat transfer to labia majora

  • What does fat transfer to labia majora target?

The goal of the fat transfer to the labia majora is to enhance the overall appearance of the vagina. It’s designed to return and/or add volume to the labia majora aka “big lips”.

  • Surgical Technique

Like for a Safer Brazilian Butt Lift, the fat is harvested from the patient's body via Vaser Liposuction and transferred back to the labia majora. Because the area is smaller than the buttocks, the fat needs to be processed to make the fat cell smaller for better retention and results.

  • Fat Transfer to Labia Majora Recovery

If the surgery is done alone, the recovery is about 3 to 5 days before going back to work, but 6 weeks before any sexual intercourse.

Labiaplasty FAQs

Obgyn or Cosmetic Surgeon?

When researching the aesthetic surgery market, most patients will find that a large majority of cosmetic surgeons offer labiaplasty. While many OBGYNs are capable of performing labia rejuvenation, the procedure is most often considered cosmetic. An OBGYN will be able to surgically remove any excess that exists within the labia; however, a cosmetic surgeon will consider the aesthetics as well. This ensures that scarring is minimal, and that color, contour, and symmetry look and feel natural.

Does It Cause Insensitivity?

As with any surgery, there may be numbness in the vaginal area after the procedure is completed. This is temporary as the skin and vaginal lips heal. In regards to sensitivity, it is important to understand that labia rejuvenation effects, for the most part, the vaginal lips only. Sensitivity is served by the clitoris. A skilled cosmetic surgeon that specializes in labiaplasty will work around this area so that a loss of sensitivity does not occur.

Does It Affect Intercourse?

Labiaplasty, when performed by a skilled surgeon, will only improve sexual intercourse. In many cases, this is because the excess skin and tissue that may have gotten in the way during sex before will now be removed. The clitoral region will be protected and the sensory nerves preserved so that sexual intercourse is not impacted in a negative way.

Before or After Pregnancy?

In most cases, it is recommended that women wait to have labia rejuvenation until after all pregnancies are complete. However, if having enlarged labia is bothersome and causes physical symptoms and emotional hardship, then this surgery can most definitely be performed before a planned pregnancy. If the results of the surgery are compromised due to a post-surgical pregnancy, a second surgery may be discussed.
